To symbolize the complete severance from his previous life, he even adopted a new name. No longer would he answer to Chris McCandless; he was now Alexander Supertramp, master of his own destiny (Krakauer 23).
The Dynamics of Family
Chris wanted nothing to do with his old life. He hated the
way his parents raised him. He would do everything in his power to not be associated
with them. He believed that he had to go as far as to change both his first and
last name to release the burden that was put upon him by his parents. By
changing his name he could find the escape that he had been looking for. For
the Supertramp part, Alex loved to tramp around, and he wanted to be known as
the greatest tramper ever so that is where the super part came from. Chris
changing his name gave him some freedom that was never given by his parents as
well as the feeling of relief that he had no longer needed to be paired
together with his past due to his name. This gave the McCandless family a very
interesting dynamic.
